Answers:
You need to condition them for at least 2 weeks before trying to breed them
you also need a 10 gallon tank with 6 inch of water and bare bottom as well as plants for the female to hide from the male
Here are a couple of great sites that explain it in detail

Hope that helps
Good luck

You shouldn't put the male and female in until they have been conditioned. Place the female next to the male with both of them in different tanks. Do this for about a week and if the male establishes a "bubble nest", then they're most likely ready to mate. Make sure they can see each other when they are in the separate tanks. If you want to know more, I suggest asking MagicMan. He is where I got this information from.
um..maybe go to like Petco or Petsmart and ask the people there. they might know??
Sometimes bettas only mate at a certain season
And if the female does not want to breed then the male will kill her. Thats probably what happened to you
The male will attack the female if she isn't full of eggs and ready to spawn. Like a few other said you need to condition them for 2 weeks prior to breeding. You have to feed them foods rich of protein. You will have to wait for your female to heal before trying to breed her again. You need to buy some antibiotics to treat her with to keep her fins from getting infected. Both fish will show signs of being ready to breed. You just have to know what to look for. Do some research on them, there is tons of info on the net.
