Okay, two out of three of my goldfish I discovered had fin rot. They actaullay had it when I got them, but it was too early to tell. So, I've been treating them with Maracy-Two. The one fish, Maria, has had her fin rot go away completely. However, my other fish, Jose, seems to be getting worse. Half of his dorsal fin is black, and the black is also on the side of his back. It was not this bad even before I started the treatment! What should I do? Please help!!

Black is often a sign of healing on goldfish. Active fin rot is white or yellowish in color. You don't mention how long you have been treating, but sometimes fin rot can take a week or more to respond to treatment. It's also possible to get resistant strains of the bacteria, so if it dowsn't seem to respond to the Maracyn 2, try another antibiotic such as Maracyn TC or Ampicillin.

Return them if you can. That's why I hate goldfish. They always die really fast or get something wrong w/ them.
First, can it pass from one fish to another? Cause if it can, place him in a diffrent bowl/fish tank. Second, look it up on google, and third. Vist a vet and ask the question. Its better if it is from a professinal.
If you don't want to return them all, I would say to at least remove Jose from your tank or fish bowl, as to not reinfect the other fish. Sometimes, even with the best care, goldfish just don't get better. So, I would remove Jose, so that Maria and the others remain healthy.
Go back to your local pet store or call one who deals only in fish and explain, see if there is another treatment they can reccomend. I had to change the water daily when this happened to me.
All signs of ammonia poisoning. You must change water more often and in greater amounts. Myracin 2 is stout medicine to say the least. Over kill for fin rot. Black is a sign of healing from ammonia burn. Now you have killed off all the biological filtration in your tank with the medicine. The filter will have to recycle. The funny thing is the fish got sick because the tank hasn't cycled yet, just when the tank was just about there you went and dumped uneccessary meds into the water. That's a mistake. Change the water, everyday if you have to. Change a lot of water, especially when ammonia or nitrites get over 1ppm. You should change at least 50% of the water when doing a water change. 10 or 25% just won't cut it, when pollutants are high. This happened because the fish keeper didn't do their homework and didn't change enough water often enough, period. When the water is kept in good condition goldfish will not get sick. Fin rot is always due to poor water quality and is actually a sign of severe stress. They didn't have it when you got them, they developed it in your tank.

How large is your tank? If it is smaller than 30 gallons, then it is likely that your tank is too small to maintain good water and your goldfish are suffering from water quality issues. Maracyn will help cure an actual bacterial infection, but wont cure bad water conditions, and will in fact make them worse since it will kill off any good healthy bacteria. It is always hard if you get sick fish, but as long as you give them good conditions, they should be able to recover from fin rot. It takes a bit for the fins to grow back, but you should see it stop and improve with care and a proper aquarium, watrer changes.
PS, the black on him is a sign of healing -- either healing of ammonia burn from bad water, or healing from the fins growing back also which fell off due to burns and issues related... good luck!

Sometimes one treatment is not enough to clear up any infection or fish illness. It would be advisable for you to move the poorly one into his own tank (you can get a small bowl for a couple of pounds down the pet shop) and retreat it. Interpet do very effective treatments and have one specific for fin fot. You may find this one more effective.
Also, fin rot can lead to an internal bacterial infection, which you will notice your fish being much more lathergic and generally looking unwell. If this is the case its a priority to treat with interpets internal bacterial infection treatment. I have had 4 fish which went this way, because the infection gets in through the damaged fins.
I would definately separate them though.

Hi, you might try doing a fifty percent water change twice a week for a while, sometimes a big water change will help you get ahead of a problem. Also, if you aren't doing it already try putting some Stress-Coat or Start-Right in the tank when you do the water changes. I have read that a tank can be heated up or cooled down to kill parasites and such, but I don't know if this would work on a decease and you would need to find out how to do it correctly so as not to kill your fish. You might talk to a vet: maybe take a fish with you; and see if they could give you any helpful ideas; it would be worth it even if it cost you an office visit fee. Some times it's really hard to figure out what's wrong with our animals, even after doing the research and trying everything we can. I hope everything turns out alright for you...Patricia
are you sure its fin rot? I got two fish at a fair last summer and one of them was blackish brown and silver and the other one was orange. The blackish brown one slowly turned orange over time and he is still alive today...the other one, not so fortunate
