Red algae and a cloudy tank?

I noticed redish algae and green algae growing in my 30 gal fish tank. I heard that green is good... However red started a day ago and the water is now turning cloudy. I just did a partial water change and changed the filter about 3 weeks ago. What should I do now?
Answers:
It is good that algae will grow but you generally want just a little in the filter tubes. Red algae is not a good sign. This is often dificult to over come. It's grow and cloudy water lead me to believe you have an imbalance in your tank. If you have fish in there test for ammonia and nitrites. If the exist perform a 50% water change and continue 15-20% changes every 2-3 days. If the tank is new and does not have fish, the tank is cycling and let it go.
The fact that you changed the filter could be the cause of the problem. The majority of nitrifying bacteria (good kind) live on the filter. This might mean your tank is now cycling. To avoid this in the future place the new filter media in your filter for about 2 weeks, if there's room, befor eliminating the old one. If there isn't room cut some of the old filter media off and place on the new media.
