Salt water tank?

I am an expert at fresh water tanks, I currently have 3 and have always been sucessful. I was thinking of starting a salt water tank, but I have been told it is to much work. Is it much more work than a freshwater tank? And what is the differences in the maintenance?
Answers:
im in the same boat as you, i worked with freshwater for 13 years.
anyway, bout 3 months ago i started my first saltwater, and it isnt that bad, but can be if you dont do research.
It takes more care as you will have to set-up the water first before a water change or adding water.
Again the supplies are different. Hydrometers are cool and a must. Most saltwater fishes like to be in 1.020-1.024 specifc gravity.
Also it depends on budget. Are you willing to spend. For live rock and sand. and corals hard or soft.
You can run a saltwater tank as fish only, fish only with live rock, and reef tanks.
Fish only would be the cheapest but not very atractive to the eye.
Anyway, i started my 20 high and i spent over 400 dollars on supplies for it, special lighting with a lunar lights, live rock and sand, soft corals, and fishes plus inverts.
Where as on of my freshwater 20 gallons can be done for alittle over 100 dollars.
So it is like anything, it is what you make it to be.
Personally i find saltwater not that hard, but im still beginning at it.
no **** its more work than a fresh water one, all you do is add water and filter. Salt water on the other hand you have to buy all the stuff let the stuff turn live add the damn expensive fish, let them die then learn what the hell happen buy more expensive fish and bam there you go salt water tank.
Im sorry to say but you didn't choose the best place to start, just do reasearch, go to local petstore that are not in a chain i.e. Petsmart, petco, try to find a private owner tropical fish store they will be much more knowledgeable, also find some books, just do more indapendent research, but they require lots of work in the beginning, then it a little downhill till you hit a bump!! But they are not as hard but you must be willing to spend and dedacate lots of attetion, some tasks may include weekly, water testing (do not use a test tab they are horribly inaccurate) weekly 10% water change (saltwater), daily top off (fresh water), If you want I have a great start up sheet I can scan for you, stepby step instructions just e-mail me @ Kyle_Schumann@yahoo.com e-mail me for any help but do research first!!
It is a little more work but a fish only tank is not that much more and that other guy is wrong there are some pretty cool fish only tanks. If you want a good reef tank then it is alot more work. You should check out these web sites The Reef Tank and Reefcentral.
